Overwatch
Blizzard's busily filling out the ranks of its upcoming team-based shooter Overwatch, having just launched a new gameplay video outlining the game's most rocket-friendly character yet, Pharah.
The video shows a complete and unedited match in 60fps, so you can pretend like you're really there or something. Take a look.
The Overwatch beta launches later this year if you fancy having a go. And if you're wondering who else you'll be able to play as, well, here's the last character to have been revealed:Reinhardt.
He has a hammer.
Scalebound and Crackdown will both be skipping this year's E3. Microsoft announced today it's opting to showcase the two Xbox One exclusives at Gamescom in August.
While both Scalebound and Crackdown were revealed during Microsoft's E3 press conference last year, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer explained on Xbox Wire that Microsoft's "jam-packed lineup of games to show at E3" makes it impossible for the company to give every upcoming Xbox One game "its well-deserved time in the spotlight." Therefore, Crackdown and Scalebound will be joining Remedy's Quantum Break "front and center" at Gamescom in August, "along with new game reveals for both Xbox One and Windows 10."
Earlier today, Microsoft announced a partnership with Oculus. As part of the deal, an Xbox One wireless controller will be shipped with every Rift headset. The companies also revealed you'll be able to stream Xbox One games to the Rift through Windows 10.
The next Assassin’s Creed game was revealed a while ago, and this being the first year the series isn't beholden to last gen tech at all, expectations are high. After the buggy mess that was Unity, Ubisoft has a lot to prove this time around. Here's our way of helping them out: pointing out what we want to see improved in Syndicate.

Streamline the parkour system

Unity featured different buttons for upwards parkour and downwards parkour, which went a long way in improving the traversal aspect of the game, but it wasn't enough as Arno was all too eager to entangle himself in the scenery and furniture now that building interiors were accessible. The games have long had a problem with horizontal movement, thinking that we always want to climb something. This is a problem that Ubisoft should be eager to fix, considering we’ve been seeing this issue ever since the first Assassin’s Creed game.

Emphasise stealth

During the actual assassination missions, Unity was pretty good about letting you sneak up and kill the target the way you chose, within reason. This is something we want to see return in Syndicate, especially with one half of the playable cast meant to specialise in stealth. The series very nearly became Mass Murderer's Creed with Edward in Black Flag, killing more pirates than scurvy, and we're happy to see a renewed focus on sneaky assassinations over freewheeling massacre.

Either make the modern plot matter, or discard it

Since the events of Assassin’s Creed 3, the modern Assassin’s plot has been mostly treading water. As we've already covered here, the overarching Animus storyline is in desperate need of a shake up with actual stakes beyond playing an in-universe video game. Or just cut it out entirely and let it be purely about Victorian Assassins doing their thing. It's about time Ubisoft cleared out this white elephant, or put it to work again.

Eject the app and the micropayments

There was nothing more frustrating in Unity than seeing the game asking you over and over again to sign in to the Unity app on your phone to do... something. Never tried it. Also never tried the micro transactions that gave us currency to buy Arno new gear. While not game breaking (most of the gear could be found), they were profoundly irritating and broke the immersion. Get rid of them.

Better resolution and frame rate

As mentioned before, using the word "cinematic" to cover up a lack of developer chops isn't going to work. Unity ran at a locked 900p/30 fps setting despite the PS4 version of Black Flag managing 1080p. Every game feels better at 60 fps, no matter the genre, and we hope that Ubisoft figured that out this time around. With nearly two years of experience with new-gen hardware under its belt, Ubisoft should go for the 1080p/60 fps setting that might someday become the industry standard.

Better use of the time period

Unity was set during the French Revolution, but barely made any attempt to merge the historical characters and scenes of the time with the gameplay. There was nothing in Unity like Ezio ending the Bonfire of the Vanities or destroying the Great Chain, or Charles Lee firing "the shot heard round the world". The series has always filled in historical gaps with its imagination and we'd like to see that return in Syndicate, especially with real world icons like Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens being involved.

Facial hair

The Victorian era was a time for fancy moustaches and magnificent sideburns. We'd like to see more of that in Syndicate.

At its pre-E3 press conference, Oculus revealed Oculus Touch – a brand new input device designed specifically for the demands of VR.
2015-06-11_13_57_08-Greenshot
The new 'controllers' – there's one for each hand – were revealed and detailed by Oculus founder Palmer Luckey. They allow players to manipulate objects inside virtual worlds, use communicative gestures. “We wanted to create an input device that lets people reach out," he said.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey demonstrates Oculus Touch.
Lucky elaborated the goals behind the project to create a new type of controller uniquely suited to virtual reality. Here went on to detail some the key features of Oculus Touch:
  • Hand presence: "Once you have your hands involved, you really need tracking to be perfect or you're going to feel like your hands are dead."
  • Precise manipulation: "You need to be able to pick up a gun from a table and then fire it, throw it, or drop it, effortlessly."
  • Low mental load: "Something that would let you use these controllers effortlessly."
  • Communicatie gestures: a matrix of sensors will allow Rift to recognise gestures like pointing and giving a thumbs up.
  • Traditional inputs: "Buttons and analog sticks are still around for a reason. Those types of inputs are not going anywhere," said Lucky. Oculus Touch will have two trigger buttons and give haptic feedback.
  • Design: there are two controllers, one for each hand, and the tracking technology used is exactly the same as that used in the Rift itself.
Oculus Rift is due for release in Q1 2016. The VR company also used the conference to announce its partnership with Microsoft and a range of content partners, including Insomniac Games which debuted its VR-exclusive title Edge of Nowhere.
Supergiant Games has brought the team's action-RPG Transistor to iPhone and iPad devices.
Transistor is now available on the App Store, costing $10 USD. The sci-fi action-RPG — which has a 1.8GB download size — features a new touch interface for iPad and iPhone, but players can also use classic controls with optional gamepad support.
Previously released on PlayStation 4 and PC, Transistor is the sophomore release from Bastion creator Supergiant. The console and PC versions of Transistor have sold over 600,000 copies.
IGN loved Transistor when it launched last year, nominating the action-RPG for game of the year.
With EA’s flagship shooter franchise ditching its Modern Warfare gimmick, at least temporarily, it’s time to look into our crystal balls and try to guess where the series can go next. There’s no strong evidence that EA will go any of these routes, except that Hardline exists and that the series was not always so staid in its ways.

Battlefield set in the future

Time: The 2040s
Place: Dystopian East Coast USA I hope
Right now, I’m just echoing the thoughts of everybody that wants a sequel to Battlefield: 2142, and what better time to get one than now? We have Battlefield trying out new things, Call of Duty pushing its timeline further and further into the future, Titanfall breathing new mech-scented life into the shooter genre, and the new-gen consoles allowing us to see more of that destructive “Levolution” that EA keeps talking about. In a freak accident, it seems that the stars have aligned perfectly to justify Battlefield: 2143.
Back in 2006, it was a novel concept. While some dismissed it as a Battlefield 2 reskin, which was apt, given that the WWII shooter was still riding high, if a little weary before Call of Duty 4 turned the genre on its head. In either case, the familiar Conquest mode attracted the crowd, but it was the surprisingly modern Titan mode that kept them coming back.
Capturing anti-Titan missile silos and launching a suicidal do-or-die assault on the reactor core once the shields of the flying fortress were down is something that sounds like it should be on new-gen. And if the 2017 iteration of Battlefield is the long awaited 2143, it soon will be.

Battlefield set in Vietnam

Time: The 1960s
Place: Vietnam
As far as wars are concerned, few ring as many bells in American culture as Vietnam, given how every tough guy actor has at some point played a violent Vietnam Vet. Facing an enemy that has every reason to fight dirty can put any guy through the wringer.
This location has remained woefully underrepresented in mainstream video games apart from the odd Bad Company DLC. A game set here could have a stunning single-player campaign, as well as multiplayer that is both sneaky lone man guerrilla tactics and all out fire fight with tanks and aeroplanes. Next-gen visuals of forests such as those shown in The Last of Us Remastered and Far Cry 4 could make the game really visually appealing.
Carrying on from the Bad Company theme, this kind of setting plays to a four-player horde mode or campaign similar to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. Playing with your buddies while fighting off the Viet Cong is an ensamble action movie ready to be made.

Battlefield set in WWII

Time: 1942
Place: Western front
It may be time to bite the bullet and go back to the roots of the military shooter genre, first put forward by Battlefield’s former stablemate Medal of Honor. The genre practically dominated the shooter scene in the sixth-generation of consoles, and it may be time to take new-gen consoles old school.
The plot can’t change much unless it’s Wolfenstein, but there’s plenty of room for character stories about heroes and sacrifice. The gameplay can hark back to the original 1942 Battlefield with a few twists to take advantage of the new-gen horsepower such as bigger matches and improved physics as well as the required graphical enhancement.
Overall, the temptation to return to the familiar setting is something that DICE has had to fight for a long time to keep up with Call of Duty, but maybe now is the time to do something radical. Going back to a simple good versus evil story while filling it with memorable characters could just be the thing the series needs.

Battlefield in Space

Time: A long long time ago
Place: A galaxy far far away
Placing a Battlefield game on an alien planet allows the developers to let their imaginations run wild; ice planets, walking tanks, hover bikes, and the such. Having the soldiers wear white armour would help them blend in and give them a truly unique look.
They could even tie in to an established sci-fi franchise such as Star War-OH WAIT!
The latest Batman: Arkham Knight trailer debuted a new mechanic called Dual Play, which will let you switch, Grand Theft Auto 5-style, between Batman and his allies.
In the trailer, we see Batman, Nightwing, Robin, and Catwoman engaging in seamless, tag team-style combat with Arkham Knight's many foes.
Several other characters make appearances in the trailer too, including Oracle, Two-Face, Scarecrow, and Azrael.
While we don't get a look at anything particularly gruesome, Arkham Knight's darker tone is evident.
We first learned of Arkham Knight's M-rating, the first ever in the series, back in February, and were provided with some details of the game's more violent scenes in March.
Batman: Arkham Knight's release date is still June 23rd for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One; Mac and Linux coming later.
Competitive Dota 2 will see three new official events added to its calendar, beginning this fall with the Dota Major Championships fall tournament. Seasonal events lead up to the annual International Championships each summer.
"These marquee tournament events will see top teams competing at premier venues around the world," the Dota 2 website explains. "There will be limited trade periods during the year for participating teams. As the Fall event approaches, more tournament details will be announced." Additionally, these three "additional tournaments will be Valve-sponsored events hosted by third-party organizers at different locations around the world," and participating teams will "be required to adhere to limited roster trade periods during the year."
Next week, Valve revealed, Dota 2 will receive a "major balance update" as well as The International 5's Compendium -- the digital program associated with The International. Purchases of The Compendium earn players in-game bonuses, and a portion of the proceeds go to the tournament prize pool.
The two new Hearthstone Heroes teased earlier this week have been unveiled as the mighty Mage Medivh, an alternative to Jaina Proudmoore, and the courageous Huntress Alleria Windrunner, who can stand in for Rexxar.
Behold Medivh...
... and Alleria.
Alleria and Medivh were hinted at during Blizzard's announcement of Tavern Brawl, a new, challenge-based multiplayer mode. They'll join the Warrior class Hero Magni Bronzebeard, who was announced last week as the game's first alternate hero, and, like Magni, will have their own animated portraits, emotes, unique match start animations, and more. They will not, however, add new cards to your deck, change the Hero power, or constitute a new class in any way.

Square Enix on Tuesday announced that its next Active Time Report will be held on Thursday, June 4.
Final Fantasy 15's Cindy
During the program, Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata will provide "development updates" for the game. He will be joined in the video briefing by global marketing manager Akio Ofuji. The video event will be broadcast on YouTube and Twitch, featuring subtitles.
The show starts at 6 AM PDT / 9 AM EDT. GameSpot will have all the news from the Active Time Report as it's announced.
June 4 falls in the "early June" window that Square Enix plans to release Episode Duscae 2.0, the updated version of Final Fantasy XV's original demo. It is expected to include a variety of changes and improvements.
During the most recent Active Time Report, held in April, Tabata and Ofuji addressed a long list of complaints about the Final Fantasy XV demo, including concerns that the game's Cindy character was "too sexy."
After taking 2014 off, the core Need for Speed series is making a comeback this year with a brand new title from Ghost Games in Sweden. While Electronic Arts has yet to officially announce this game, we now know a little more about it, at least regarding how far along in development it is.
During a recent earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed that the game will launch this year, and teased that it is "already looking spectacular." Unfortunately, he didn't say anything more about the game.
2014 was the first year without a new, core Need for Speed title release in over a decade. In May 2014, EA confirmed that it would not launch new entry in the franchise until 2015 so that the project could have an "extended development window."
Ghost Games GM Marcus Nilsson said in May 2014: "We are already deep in development on our next game and want to make this promise to you: we will listen to you. We're going to give you the game you've been asking for. It will be the game you deserve, but to do that will take us some time," he said.
Nilsson further boasted about the game at the time, describing it as "highly innovative" and an "experience built on a foundation we know you'll greatly look forward to."
In addition to the new title from Ghost Games, EA plans to release Need for Speed: No Limits, a free-to-play racing game for mobiles, later this year.
Ubisoft's upcoming open-world role-playing game, Tom Clancy's The Division, is getting some additional development help from the team behind Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell multiplayer, the publisher announced today.
Joining existing teams Massive Entertainment in Sweden, Red Storm in the U.S. and Ubisoft Reflections in the U.K. is Ubisoft Annency, the French studio that has lead development on recent Assassin's Creed multiplayer games.
"The team in Annecy is delighted to be collaborating with Massive, Red Storm and Reflections on Tom Clancy's The Division," said Rebecka Coutaz, studio manager at Ubisoft Annency. "We are bringing our previous experience in multiplayer online games and this project is allowing us to build our technical knowledge in other areas and become experts on this incredible brand. The collaboration with the other studios is going very smoothly, and we're working together to ensure we meet and exceed the high expectations players have for this new title."
A post on Ubisoft's official blog says the Annency team's role is being kept secret for now, though it's not unreasonable to assume that it will contribute to The Division's multiplayer, given Coutaz's comments. Multiple teams contributing to one title is commonplace at Ubisoft; last year's Assassin's Creed Unity featured the work of 10 Ubisoft teams.
Tom Clancy's The Division was announced at E3 2013. The open-world shooter is set in New York City in the midst of a viral pandemic that has led to the collapse of the U.S. government.
Last we heard, The Division was coming sometime in 2015 to PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.

A user on NeoGAF that goes by the name of kampfheld, happens to be a verified developer on the Cloudgine engine, which is the tech that will be powering the  cloud based features of the upcoming Crackdown reboot for Xbox One. Today, he revealed a couple pieces of new information regarding Crackdown for Xbox One.
Kampfheld cleared up a common misconception today as he confirmed that Cloudgine is only developing the tech for Crackdown, and future games that use the power of the cloud. The studio developing the actual game will be named in the not too far off future.
The developer also noted that there’s a lot of doubt regarding what can be done with the so called “power of the cloud” and he’s well aware of the challenges Cloudgine is facing, but in his response on NeoGAF, the developers behind Cloudgine seem very confident in what they’re developing.
On another note, the latest installment is known to be heavily supported with the cloud(TM). Yayaya … That stupid cloud talk again ðŸ˜‰ I know you can not hear it anymore. What I want to say though is: your local gaming mashine does not have enough calculation power to run our game engine. I think we always communicated it that way and there is no reason not to be honest here. If you want to deliver something that has never been done before in that kind of scale, then you can not make compromises. We totally know that there are huge risks involved. But this is the route we will take. We are super confident here and can’t wait to get out of the dark.
Personally, I can totally understand that there are huge doubts. I’m not an idiot. Too many games did things wrong or communicated something wrong. People want to see what cloud computing can be used to in gaming. So give a chance at least on showing this. I think that would be fair.
It’s up to us to deliver on your bolded sentence. Again – personally – I want to see you playing this game really thinking “holy SHIT why doesn’t my mashine burn already?”. We want to achieve this. And we’re working super hard to get to that point.
Based on Crackdown’s use of the tech that Cloudgine is building, many gamers seem to be wondering if the game will be an online only experience, similar to Destiny or The Division. According to Kampfheld, there will be a single player mode for the game and it will not be a multiplayer only title. Good.
The developer teased that a small tech demo may be coming soon to show off more of Cloudgine’s capabilities, but he couldn’t promise anything. Having said that, the developer said to expect more information this year regarding Cloudgine and Crackdown on Xbox One.
It’ll be very interesting to see how Cloudgine develops and if there will be a large number of people eating crow later this year. If Cloudgine can achieve what they’re working towards, I don’t think gaming will ever be the same.
